Title sequence for "Hamilton's Pharmacopeia," the VICELAND documentary series hosted by chemist and journalist Hamilton Morris, investigating the history, chemistry, and societal impact of the world's most extraordinary drugs.
Spike Jonze, executive creative, wanted a real, human quality — the answer was a hand-drawn, inky, haphazard, psychedelic approach, storyboards and technique built from scratch in a gonzo-esque illustrative style.
The goal: push traditional pen-and-ink further than it had gone visually, using CGI, while keeping it feeling authentically hand-drawn. Concept art was drawn by hand in real pen, ink, and charcoal, then animated in 3D and particle space using original custom techniques. A team of cel, 2D, and 3D animators carried the work forward, composited solo at the end.
The result traces Morris's expeditions — clandestine lab to Madagascar jungle, mushroom fields to his own laboratory — one disorientingly seamless journey through drug use and production.
